Maak kennis met de 9 curatoren van Hit The City

Van 21 tot en met 23 oktober vindt Hit The City weer plaats: het muzikale verlengstuk van Dutch Design Week. Effenaar en Friendly Fire schakelen de hulp in van lokale en nationale curatoren om samen een driedaags stadsfestival te programmeren dat verder gaat dan muziek alleen. Waar men het ene moment geniet van een serene sessie met singer-songwriters, wordt er aan de andere kant van de stad gedanst tijdens een queer clubnacht. Deze 9 curatoren nemen ieder hun eigen expertise mee en geven een nieuwe twist aan Hit The City:

Alora / Boolin / Coloray / De Brakke Grond / Doodswens / Homegrown / Homohooligan / Onuitgesproken / The Ruggeds

Uitgelicht: De Brakke Grond & Homohooligan

De Brakke Grond, het Vlaamse cultuurhuis gevestigd in Amsterdam, introduceert Hit The City aan de meest belovende artiesten uit ons zuidelijke buurland. Op vrijdag 21 oktober programmeert het cultuurhuis een avond in Altstadt met de krachtige stemmen, looks en performances van IKRAAAN, Oriana Ikomo en MEYY. Een vrouwelijke line-up voor liefhebbers van soul en hiphop.

Homohooligan zal op zaterdag 22 oktober onder de naam ‘Club Hooligan’ een educatieve clubnacht programmeren. Onder het thema ‘Designing Safe Spaces’ start de avond met een panel talk waar drie speciale LHBTQIA+ plekken onder de loep worden genomen. Vervolgens transformeert het Stroomhuis tot queer club, met drag performances van ChelseaBoy en house muziek van onder andere de Berlijnse-dj Byron Yeates.

Nieuwe locaties

Hit The City breidt dit jaar uit naar 10 locaties in Eindhoven. Nieuw op de lijst zijn: Haven, Kelderman En Van Noort (KEVN) en The Student Hotel Eindhoven.

Haven, gelegen aan de Smalle Haven, is het nieuwe nachtconcept van Dynamo. De locatie wordt op zaterdag 22 september geprogrammeerd door hiphop-collectief Boolin, waarbij energieke performances van Ella John, Doevoe en Jiri11 de kelder zullen afbreken. 

Kelderman En Van Noort (KEVN) ligt niet direct in het centrum, maar is wellicht één van de meest karakteristieke locaties qua architectuur. Het gerenoveerde schoolgebouw is alle dagen onderdeel van het festival, met uiteenlopende genres van indie tot hiphop en punk. Gelegen in Woensel-West, naast Station Strijp-S, is de locatie slechts 1 stop verwijderd van het centraal station. 

The Student Hotel, gelegen tussen Effenaar en Eindhoven Centraal, neemt ook alle drie de dagen deel aan het festival. Curatoren Homegrown, Onuitgesproken en The Ruggeds programmeren er een divers programma vol intieme sessies met zang, spoken word en dans.

Jessy about Battle Of The Year 2021

First off, congrats on getting second place! It's an amazing achievement and maybe even more so because it's the special edition of BOTY. Can you tell a little bit about BOTY and what made this edition so special?

It’s the biggest crew competition in the world and as kids, we were dreaming of being on that big stage. The first time we entered Battle Of The Year we got 2nd place against Korea in 2013. This year we decided to make a comeback with the whole crew since we didn’t do many crew battles, because of COVID obviously but mainly because we put more time into performing and making our shows. What’s special about this edition was being together again after so many years and seeing how the individual skills have improved and so has our chemistry. We’re all more mature, still got that ruggedness but it’s just more controlled.

The caption on Instagram says 'we know we can do better’ and 'we'll be back with more focus'. What do you think is meant by this?

Once again we took 2nd place against Jinjo crew (Korea), who we’ve battled many times and are a very hard crew to defeat cause they are always well prepared. It looked possible on paper with the squad and routines we had. But in reality, we needed a little more time to rehearse for a battle like this. We just came off our Sweden tour, did a show on Dancing With The Stars Belgium, threw 2 events (Breakjunkies & Crashfest) and only had one week to finish up our showcase and routines for BOTY. Usually, preparation for a battle like this takes months. So yeah, we already said we wanna do it again next year and take more time to get ready.

What is your overall feeling about this weekend?

We had fun, felt ready and we enjoyed the battles, that’s what matters to us now. Our favourite moments take place when the music is on point, shout out to DJ Nobunaga for playing us some fire tunes!

Battle Of The Year is happening this weekend in Montpellier!

After participating in 2013, The Ruggeds are back on the BOTY stage. We are invited to participate alongside 7 of the best Breaking crews in the world: Flooriorz (Japan) - Jinjo (Korea) - Tie Break (France) - VinoTinto (Venezuela) - Hustle Kids (Belgium) - The Squadron (USA) and Monster Crew (USA). This is of course a huge honour, and we’re determent to make the most of it!
